Creating a balanced environment for children and teenagers is important for their growth and development. In order to have a balanced environment clutter must be minimal; organizing systems must be in place along with good color choices.

Here are a few key skills you can teach your children at a young age that will help them stay more focused and organized so they can create their own balanced environment when they grow up. One of the most important things to teach them is to keep all like things together: toys, art supplies, shoes etc. Label and give them a specific area to be stored. Start teaching your children where they belong and how to put things away when they are done playing with them. Encourage them to be creative by making their own labels with colored markers or crayons. Get them involved as much as possible.

Newborns

Preparing for the arrival of a newborn is an exciting time that can make some new parents a little apprehensive. Remember to take a deep breath and take your time when you are creating your little ones safe haven! According to feng shui principles, you want to slowly decorate, to nurture the space as the baby grows. The Chinese believe that if you decorate too quickly the baby will sense your urgency.

The secret is to create a soft nurturing environment where your baby can prosper. Select furniture that has rounded corners and is sturdy. Position  the baby's crib farthest away from the door in the nursery so he or she is protected from external light and disruptive sounds. Try not to locate the crib under a window because it might not allow the baby to sleep soundly. If this is your only option get a sturdy blind to create more support and protection.

Color plays an important role when you are decorating your nursery. Choose colors that will promote learning and growth such as soft greens. Soft blues also have a harmonious effect on children and reduces hyperactivity. Studies have shown that yellow tends to make babies cry more often.

Tips to Clear Clutter & Create Harmony

  • Switch toys out. Children in general become bored and tired of certain toys and need new stimulation. Create a storage space in your basement to store toys they have tired of and recycle them out each month. As you add more toys to your child’s collection think about donating some or label and store them for your next baby.

  • Leave open space. Do not pack your child’s room with so much stuff that it becomes over stimulating and cramped. Leave open space so they can be creative and express themselves.

  • Choose good colors like greens and blues. Bright white should be avoided because it can be over stimulating when it reflects light and limit concentration.

Teenagers
Learning simple strategies to balance their environment can help teenagers think better, organize better and make clearer decisions. Eliminating clutter is important for clarity. By working with their “home base” (bedroom) to eliminate clutter teenagers will save time and have the ability to become more focused on what they want to achieve.

Tips to Clear Clutter & Create Harmony

  • Limit visual chaos. Try not to cover every corner of wall space in your room. Leave some open for your eyes to rest and your mind to relax.

  • Use organizing storage solutions. Using labeled bins to store clothing accessories, school supplies, arts and crafts, sports gear etc. can minimize stress and save time locating lost items.

  • Suggest positive color choices like blue, green, violet, creamy butter and earth colors. Green can produce calm, blue can produce serenity and light creamy yellow is uplifting.
